Aims and Vision

“One language sets you in a corridor for life. Two languages open every door along the way.”

Frank Smith, To Think: In Language, Learning and Education

The main aims for learning foreign languages are to

  • Provide interactive and innovative teaching which enables pupils to learn creatively.
  • Increase pupils’ confidence in improving their speaking skills.
  • Lay the foundations for exam preparation from KS3 onwards.
  • Open gateways to cultural learning, by teaching about Francophone countries.

The study of languages prepares pupils to participate in a rapidly changing world in which work and other activities are increasingly carried out in languages other than English. Pupils use languages to communicate information responsibly, creatively and with discrimination. They learn how to employ languages to enable rapid access to ideas and experiences from a wide range of people, communities and cultures. Increased capability in the use of languages promotes initiative and independent learning and encourages diversity within society.

The French Department at Belvedere British School aims to facilitate the path to linguistic and cultural enlightenment to all pupils. We help our students to improve, not only their language learning skills, but also their cultural awareness, making them conscious and responsible global citizens, whilst simultaneously refining their communication skills. The staff has taken the responsibility to ensure that each and every pupil builds on their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills through innovative and interactive teaching. We aim to teach skills which will help pupils further their education and be invaluable throughout their lives.
